| Lots of ideas brewing around the Boot these days. Last night was the last film in the first No. 9 Series - Velvet Goldmine and it is directed by Todd Haynes. If you like David Bowie then you should have come. We have got some really good input for the second series but it looks like we are going to take two weeks off before we start it. Starting April 16 we have our little cooking class series Cooking with 5 Points. It will be on Monday Nights from 6-8PM and we will be doing them in series of 4. Four chefs from different area restaurants will teach a different class. Chefs and class lessons will be announced in the coming week. You will be able to purchase all four lessons for $45 or the walk-in price of $15. Class size will be limited and sign-ups are encouraged. All the proceeds go to the 5 Points Community Farm Market as they need to raise the funds to make their downtown summer market improve. Shopping at the Farmer's Market is incredibly important not to mention so much better for you. Remember if they dont have what you want, you have to go back every week and ask - its the community farm market and that means you can help shape it. We have got some really amazing shows lined up for the next couple weeks this email is going to tell you about them. Take some time to listen to a track by each band and come out to the ones you love the most.

TUES MAR 20, 2007
Them, Roaringtwenties | site
Dustin Hogue | site
Newbourg Syndrome | site
Time: 9pm
Tickets: $5 |
leaf tornadoes got it goin on .
Them, Roaringtwenting are from Chicago, which has a great math rock scene and these fellas are kinda mathy. Not in a heavy way but more in a whimsical way. Kind of like a rapid run through an animated wonderland with a couple of tripped out sound bites thrown in to remind us that it can't all be animated. Wikipedia has a cool little section on math rock http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Math_rock HERE. Local Dustin Hogue will be joining us this evening as well and if you have yet to experience his uncanny resemblance to Bob Dylan or Woodie Guthrie then we highly suggest you come out and enjoy some good lovin.

Time: 10 pm
Tickets: $5 / Theme Participators $3 |
100% Muscle sums it up .
dark danceable shoegaze. it seems kids want to say post-rock but it really doesn't fit, maybe post-dance. It says on their myspace "We play rock music." this pretty much covers it. Your going to find elements to a lot of styles but it is just good hard driving rock music. If Relative had a kickball team, our first pick would be Big Sleep, nuff said. Now for Snakes! we are definitely talking some danceable additions to the post-punk world, We keep thinking Blood Brothers lite when we hear them which is just how we like our Blood Brothers. This show is going to top out our audience meter so be sure to show up on time.
THEME: Indiana Jones - think archealogical and outdoorsy khaki - please no whips! Imagine if Big Sleep and Snakes! play to an audience and everyone is wearing a full brim adventurer hat! YES!

spaceships are the new dope .
This show is going to be huge and hard to manage. So we are going to clearly line out the exact parameters for the evening so you can decipher when the optimal time is for you to throw your trousers on the stage. First we have Adam Arcuragi going on at 9PM prompt. He is a southern influenced singer/songwriter that has a carefree grit and splendid scowl. Followed by Trentalange who use to play with Crooked Fingers, now this temptational singer is pulling a more PJ Harvey/Sarah MacLaughlin style but influences are coming from the early 80s goth era. Next on the lineup is Twilight Sad. They are on Fat Cat records and this is definitely pulling on the overall dance/shoegaze theme of the week but they have British feel that calls to mind I Am Kloot - noisy yet wonderful. Headlining the show is Brazil it wont be long before these guys are back but playing the Norva. Check out Candles Cast Long Shadows - it sounds like David Bowie singing for Yes. This is grade A buzz we are bringing to this city.

Prisms | site
Prayers (ex-Plot) | site
The Mint Chicks | site
Time: 10pm
Tickets: $5 / Theme Participators $3 |
juicy fruit is so much more than gum .
seriously this is a big time throwback night. Prisms are dishing out their wall of Kevin Shields inspired rock which only becomes more masterful with every show they do. It is likely that their small Newport News sound collective will end up starting a label or team up with one to get this area on the experimental/ambient map. Then we have Prayers (ex-Plot To Blow Up The Eifel Tower) and they are completely different. Kind of bubble gum greaser rock. Trust us - it's good. You know that dreamy guitar tone Phil Spector put behind every girl group in the 60s? Well the Prayers are swinging up the stage with it like they were the Zombies or something. Then we have the Mint Chicks, which equals punch chugging good times. Its something like Hot Hot Heat but bringing out of that silly boy pop like Dexy's Midnight Runners or Adam Ant. oh yeah this show has a theme too!
THEME: Guys - Fedora, white t shirt, tuxedo vest. Girls - bangs, beads, tights. We need to look hot for these bands, Mint Chicks are coming all the way from New Zealand.

tight vinyl for a saturday night .
we had Pony Pants play Relative Theory last summer and no lie it was a sweat fest or maybe a feast as the crowd left quite full of some dance-alicious sass rock. We will be spinning the best and newest of the dance punk scene - Have you heard those LCD Soundsystem remixes? so trite! ha it's opposite day! Come on out to get turned on as we will be giving away free American Apparel leggings. Kidding? You'll have to come by to find out.
THEME: Leggings. Any color. Guys and Girls.

SUN MAR 25, 2007 @ RTR
Locksley | site
Scissor For Lefty | site
Time: 7pm
Tickets: $5 |
my vest is oh so tight .
This show is going down at Relative Theory but it is important so we felt it necessary to mention in the Boot News. If you love Beatles throwback or just two dudes singing into one microphone then you need to come out to see Locksley. These guys are fun, entirely charming, and they can harmonize like a barbershop quartet. If you love insatiable dance rock then you must come out for the new age ass wigglers Scissors For Lefty. I am not sure about the name other than I truly longed for such utensils throughout grade school. I'm over it now but it could have screwed me up. Check out some of the following links to see if you would enjoy a good evening at Relative Theory.

MON MAR 26, 2007 @ RTR
Minmae | site
French Fish Face | site
Paper Date | site
Time: 8pm
Tickets: $5 |
my baby is gettin' its ears pierced .
here we are bringing Minmae to town and we are pumped because it is not often we get a Pavement/Sonic Youth influenced band that sounds really great but still holds its own without being a rip off. They add a little bit of that psychedelic pop sound when all the bands of the 60s started practicing free thought and put yerts up in their living room and building sandboxes inside. You know that whole obsession of trying to bring the outdoors to the indoors and everyone starts chanting for some reason. Well Minmae figured out how to get just the right amount of that before it gets silly. They are professionals, what can we say? Locals French Fish Face are back on the scene with their experimental post-punk vibe, and Paper Date are newbies to Relative so we shall see how the show unveils. We are going to get warmed up by selling a few McKlusky records

TUES MAR 27, 2007
Drakkar Sauna | site
Dead Trees | site
Seamonster | site
Time: 9pm
Tickets: $5 |
i'm an oak barrel roller .
Sometimes we get shows and our stoke-meter blows off the scale and we think how amazing this night will be and we get all excited and order a pizza! Yeah! Seriously we are bringing Drakkar Sauna - they are not even from here but they sing songs about Virginia cuz they love it so. On their myspace they list Mandy Patinkin as an influence! Me too! You killed my father prepare to die - changed my life! Plus we got Dead Trees playing this bill fresh off their tour with Albert Hammond Jr. They have some psychedelic rock that is up your alley if you dig on a country version of Velvet Underground. Maybe that is a stretch and you would maybe better connect to the rambling style of Pete Yorn. You know - actin like you never had a burrito in the morning. Plus Seamonster is closing this out and we all know its good to have locals you are proud of. yes that is a preposition ending that last sentence.
