| It's been a long time coming but I know a change gone come.
okay, this email may be a little exhausting as March tends to backhand us with bands going to and fro SXSW festival in Austin TX. We need you to clear some days out of your schedule because we realize that going to SXSW is a better way to see a lot of music but really if you can't take off work then we enjoy bringing talent to Norfolk. So just put $30 aside and pick 6 shows for March that you just cant miss even though there are at least 10 shows that warrant belt slaps if unattended. Also we would like to say that these weekly emails are not just going to encompass upcoming shows but we will be talking about what local foods we are using this week at the Boot as well as what is in season or about to be in season. We have been going back and forth on the best ways to educate about local foods and the benefits of a 100 mile diet and finally coming up with some solid ideas. You'll see them take shape in the next month, remember you need to take good care of your body so you can rock out at shows well into your 70s. Really why else would you take care of yourself?

THU MAR 01, 2007
Blank Blank and the Wilson St Warriors | site
The Embarrassing Fruits | site
Time: 10pm
Tickets: $5 |
where does the spiral go .
the name means nothing at least as far as we can tell. it is also very long to have to write on a flyer. regardless do not let discourage you from checking Blank Blank and their rambling distorted pop melodies. they are coming up from Greensboro, NC and list their influences as 40s and winking owl and we first thought that meant people in their 40s but we suppose it's winking owls sipping on 40s. Either way we have decided it could be said that Fire Theft and Neil Young went hunting for UFOs. The Embarrassing Fruits are right up your alley if you dug Pavement and Sonic Youth. Not trying to be typical 90s alternative but that is what it is and typical 90s alternative is and was good. Come out and have some fun. We will set up a table you can kick over if you want to be rowdy.

Palace Green | site
Dirty On Purpose | site

whoa it is super foggy .
In the business this is what we call a mega-show. All these bands are good and really this is one of those shows where you say in 4 years - "pssh I saw them like 6 years ago at the Boot." "But I thought the Boot opened 4 years ago." "pssh the first 2 years they were only opened underground, surprised you didn't know that."
let us make it easy. Relay - shoegaze from Philly, My Bloody Valentinesque / Lymbyc Systym - electronic instrumental a la Tortoise / Dirty On Purpose - pretty, dreamy, quiet, and loud, think Stars / Palace Green - earnest but overall hypnotic, remember Canyon? Don't miss this show

SAT MAR 03, 2007
Telograph | site
Foxtrot Rio | site
Time: 10 pm
Tickets: $5 |
whiffle ball is damn fun .
so Telograph features the talents of one time local J.B. Whittenburg who fronted the band Hallelujah Boy which was a killer local band heavily influenced by Guided By Voices. Here he teams up with a group of individuals more tuned to a brit pop station most notably similar to The Doves. The ringing guitars send you swirling through space mountain but the wholehearted fervent vocals calm your way. It's cool to know our community contributed to this. Local southern anthem crooners Foxtrot Rio are also on the bill and we are sure they will have ladies whistling. It is just what happens at their shows. It's science.

dark smiles all around .
So normally we are closed on Mondays but this time we are open for a special occasion. One time resident and writer for Virginia Pilot Jennifer Dziura will be in town as she is on tour with Molly Crabapple author of Dr. Sketchy's Coloring Book. She will be bringing her comedy to the Boot and we can rest assure that she will is well seasoned after letting the Big Apple break her in. Following her performance will be the lovely cello talents of Orion Rigel Dommisse and then the hauntingly beautiful folk sagas of Marissa Nadler. She performed last year at the record store and left us all wide eyed and slack-jawed. We will open the doors at 7pm to get the crowd seated and let people order food if they so desire. This is going to be Grade A so be sure to write this in your day planner, I mean night planner.

Gonzo had a stellar hook shot .
This show is for all the soldiers out there who feel like there are not enough reasons to high kick. No matter how tight your pants are just pull up that knee and SNAP! kick a pencil out your teacher's hand, kick a bag of chips out the bully's mouth, kick a bar of soap at your dirty dog. This show is going to knock socks off and put self-confidence through the roof. If you bring a bowl of fruit salad to this show then you get it free. Why? because you kick ass and you fed the door guys so we dont have to. Rock on wit yo bad self!

WED MAR 07, 2007
Amy Ferebee | site
Tom Brosseau | site
Dustin Hogue | site
Time: 9pm
Tickets: $5 |
calling beyond the hills .
This is our annual take me back night. Just playing, not even sure what that means. Do you like the sound of that wild blue yonder? Well we booked it for this night and it is hopefully turning the tears into beers. Amy Ferebee is a local ceelebrity who has the high lonesome sound as well as many other celtic and jazz talents, we dig her holy style. Tom Brosseau is kind of like the rambling folk singing ghost of Jeff Buckley. His voice is so delicate and stories so touching. And then there was Dustin Hogue - our local troubador known for his obsession of the olden days. Folklore says he is a master bowler and writes a new song everytime he gets a strike!

FRI MAR 09, 2007
Carrigan | site
Wild Animal Party | site
Foxtrot Rio | site
Time: 10pm
Tickets: $5 |
when the lights go down .
Does anyone wish Journey would have an acoustic session at The Boot? Just me? well this show has nothing to do with that desire - in fact it is quite the opposite. Who here likes U2 and Radiohead? Who here thought U2 was Radiohead? Well they are not the same but some bands can bend and shape sounds in ways to make you think so. Carrigan does all this in a spacey kind of techno way. Sounds gross but trust me it could be fun with a lima bean and a disco ball. Wild Animal Party is playing as well and these guys care about one thing - getting closer to nature. They will take two microphone stands and rub them together until a spark shoots out and causes coconut milk to drip from the stage lights. damn its late... just enjoy some fantastic storytelling and feel the love.

SAT MAR 10, 2007
Demander | site
Your Black Star | site
Time: 10pm

organization is key .
C & C Music Factory was a great name for a band. Seriously - they were a music factory. Always on the production line. Beats were their bottom line! Demander is like that only there are two Zelmas in this band! Could they be any sexier? Short answer - no. Long answer - we suppose they could be sexier but our tolerance is very low as humans and it would just be wasted sexiness. Instead they mastered a style of sass rock that brought together the worlds of Tijiuana and Brooklyn. Think going to a baseball game in your swim trunks and smelling ripe of tequila. We are going to party on this one. And Your Black Star - we have written well over 6 times that they are like the sons of Elliott growing up on Cure mix tapes. All good in this hood.
